The prints are selected from three recent portfolios: Elke, a series of monotype portraits of the artist’s wife, who, in addition to printing some of the artist’s works, has long been a central figure in Baselitz’s imagery.

The second Fluß und Schrift, (Stream and Writing) is based on Baselitz’s reading of Antonin Artaud’s Thêatre de Séraphim. The forms of contorted bodies and corporeal details address and reconfigure Artaud’s images of creation arising from the fragmentary detritus of destruction.

The third group, Im Walde von Blainville, (In the Forest of Blainville) takes its title from the Blainville (Duchamp’s birthplace) and its erotic images from antiquity (Pompeian frescoes) to modern times (Picasso’s etchings): a debate between the ex-painter and the painter.
