Summer 2005
Wide Views
The universe is wider than our views of it.
Henry David Thoreau
Margarete Roeder Gallery is pleased to present Wide Views, a group exhibition with eleven artists for June and July 2005. Gallery summer hours are Wednesday-Friday, 11-5:30. The gallery is closed the month of August and available by appointment only. The exhibition includes works by John Baldessari, Jill Baroff, Andreas Gursky, Sylvia Plimack Mangold, Simone Nieweg, Claes Oldenburg, Gerhard Richter, Michael Toenges, Peter Tollens, Andy Warhol, and Lawrence Weiner.
Wide Views, necessarily inclusive, presents images ranging from the photographic landscape, either urban (Gursky) or rural (Nieweg), to the cultural landscape (the day-glo of Warhol's touristic Neuschwanstein), and the linguistic referents of Weiner's Across the Great Divide. But the exhibition also includes in its spectrum the paint chip panoply of Richter's 1,260 Colors, with Baroff's “real” color chart of twenty-eight blue New York skies, presented as a faux Pantone sample. The immediacy of palpable experience is evoked both in Plimack Mangold's drawing of a Pin Oak and in Toenges' painting, which although entirely abstract, invites us to devise a landscape in its thickly encrusted surface.
