Watercolors 1989-2006

Jerry Zeniuk

Margarete Roeder Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of Watercolors, 1989-2006
by Jerry Zeniuk from April 7-May 26, 2006. A reception for the artist will be held on Friday April 7,
from 6-8 PM.

The exhibition will present around twenty of Zeniuk's watercolors painted over a seventeen-year period, a selection made by the artist himself.

In contrast to his somber monochrome paintings of the 1970s, these watercolors make ready use of brilliant, high-key color, the immediacy of the works is intensified by their relatively large scale around twenty-by-thirty inches. Broad, freely applied horizontal strokes of color sweep across the paper's surface demonstrating the simplicity of Zeniuk's art and his control of the medium. And closer inspection reveals the carefully demarcated edges touching and overlapping each other, or exposing the bare paper.

Nonetheless, these works are not simply formal exercises in color and its management but rather an evocative manifestation of its expressive possibilities. As Zeniuk has written, "What I feel most strongly is that color is the shortest way to the heart, to feelings, to emotions. And emotions in turn lead us to meaning, which then allows for transcendence. In this way color leads the way to an understanding of life."
